User Guide: Messaging
|
SYSOP'S NOTE: Messaging is not available to the general public - it's
the one feature of this site that is prone to abuse, so I do not allow just
anyone to send messages from my server. Unless you know me - or more aptly,
unless I know and trust you - you will not be able to set up messages, and I
probably will not be willing to enable you to do so. |
The message center enables you to set up "death notices" that will be sent
out in the event that you do not log into the system for a predetermined number
of days. These messages are useful for things like telling people where to
find important information, such as the logins for systems to which only you
have access, the location of important documents (your will, insurance paperwork,
etc.), or other information that others might need in the event that you are
unavailable, incapacitated, or dead.
Messaging Basics
If messaging is enabled for your account, you will be able to set up a
specific number of messages. For each message, you may specify the
following:
- The date (number of days since last login) when
the message should be sent
- Up to five recipients
- Subject line
- Message content
The "from" address cannot be altered - it will be the e-mail address
associated with the account.
Messaging Tips
- It is possible to set a message to send in fewer than three
days - but it is not advised, as you will not receive your
first reminder until three days have passed.
- It is also inadvisable to send any confidential information
in the message body - as that information will be sent as
clear text to the server when you input it, and as clear text
in an e-mail message when it is sent. The best approach is
to store the information in a secure location - an encrypted
computer file burned to CD - and use the message to tell the
recipient the location and provide the encryption key.
- The maintenance routine that sends messages runs in the wee
hours of the morning - so if your message is set to send five
days after your last login, you cannot log in at noon on the
fifth day to prevent it from being sent.
For more information about messaging, see the messaging questions
in the site's FAQ.
